(Side) Upper Middle Lower – Indian Railways
Indian Railways is one of the largest and busiest rail networks in the world. Until recently it was making loss and was on the verge of bankruptcy. Under Railway Minister Lalloo Prasad Yadav it saw a cash surplus of 9000cr INR on 2005, followed by 14,000cr and 20,000cr in the subsequent years. This is no simple task in an organisation that is as huge as the Railways. Managing such an organisation successfully speaks volumes about the men behind the scenes for Railways. Kudos for this great achievement!
But how did they manage all this surplus all of a sudden? I am no follower of politics or of the railway budget. From what I observe in my experiences with the Railways, the paradigm shift in their policy making is evident. For example, the emergency reservation of tickets or more famously the tatkal tickets, had a price revision. The SL class passengers must shell out Rs150 extra during the peak season and Rs75 during the non-peak season for the tatkal tickets. This sometimes turns out to be twice the normal fare, and absolutely unaffordable at the least! But in a country that boasts a billion population you must be clairvoyant to get your rail tickets without any hassles. Now this particular policy may be justified by some economics that I may not understand. But having a side middle berth introduced in the trains is not going to have many supporters!
Are you shocked? Yes, the Railways have started making modifications to the coaches so that a side middle berth is fitted and the seat numbers also suitably modified. This is certainly a large scale project and they are carrying it out in phases. I am not being cynical when I say, “I knew they will mess this up!”. They have not removed the old numbers that have 8 in a bay. Even better they still sell only 72 tickets per coach. No announcement as to which of the two numbering must be followed. All this make a perfect recipe for passenger quarrels. As expected, there are two warring factions with opposing views on which numbering must be followed. Generally, the faction one chooses to be in has got nothing to do with his political/regional/religious alignment. He/She chooses a side based on whichever system provides a seat they prefer. Some educated and calm, ladies and gentlemen prefer to wait for the TTE to pronounce the judgment. The TTE throws his arms saying that Railways is full of money minded policy makers and that he cant help it. Some of them go to the extent of asking Railway Police Force to sort out the issue. Now both the factions are justified, no matter what made them choose sides. They have paid for the service. Isn’t it the responsibilty of the Railway officials to clear the confusion by putting up a notice regarding this extra berth? Can’t they simply stick a notice besides the passenger chart telling which numbering system to adopt? I hope this issue is sorted out at the earliest. I dont think I can take the numbering confusion for the third time!

ooh… I want to take a look at those coaches….
dei nejama va?? side middle a??? enakum, unakum length e patthathu da… ippo height um patthathu!!
;)
how else do u think railways ran into huge profits other than tatkal da?? jus like the theatre owner himself sells tickets in black, plain SL tickets are labeled tatkal and sold to us at double rates da.. namba thalaezhuthu da.. wat to do..
i ve a suggestion for laloo da.. there is the gap within a bay between the opposite set of seats no.. maybe they can fold some cushion there n call it the sub-lower berth da.. railways will soon compete with infosys for their profit margins!!!
namba thalai la molagaa arachu, enna vena pannuva da!!!
there is a side middle?!!How did they fit it?!Should check it out.nice post:)
Yes! There is this new horrible seating arrangement conceived possibly by our Lallu. This sends shivers down your spine and gives you claustrophobic feeling once you are on the Side upper with the coach roof very close to you. In addition the middle berth is hung by thin leather belts unlike the usual iron chains/rod. All this keeps you wake up all the night. So if this trend goes on where is the end. Tomorrow another berth may come up in the empty space between the two main berth rows.
I have just come home traveling in this side middle berth. It is a horrible experience to sleep in this one. I just felt like being carried in stretcher to some hospital. But, they seem to claim that they are facilitating the passengers in arranging these berths to accommodate only the RAC candidates instead asking them to share a single berth. The TC also mentioned that no one would get the side middle berth when you do the regular reservations. These are purely meant for the RAC.. but the side lower and side upper people are also victims as part of this plan. Really God knows where this is leading to.
With the addition of this extra side berth, the sleeper coach is looking more like a general. The seat alloted to the side middle berth person will be the main seat which was accomodating 3. Now, imagine 4 people sitting in that. Its very congested. Very problematic while having lunch/dinner. I request Indian Railways to please remove this extra side berth and make our journey a happy one.
Looks like they want to transport people like cattle. Has any one raised any litigation in this regard?
This is the idea which could only come into our non-matric railway minister`s mind. It is very much expected from the person who has eaten up the “Vains ka Chara” and all that. But dear lalu ji we are not ur Rabri`s pets and cattle, we are citizens of India. Shame on this bloody illeterate bullshit.
Hi,
I always loved the side lower because it gave a good scenic view of the travel route and the side upper was not that bad…
Yesterday i had the horrible experience of traveling in the modified Side Upper from Kovilpatti to Chennai.
Actually i was alloted the side lower which I had to give up since the side upper and middle had been allocated to a couple and the poor lady was claiming to be 7 months PREGNANT.
The Side upper is so claustrophobic, I could not sleep even after I tried all the tricks for 3 hours..
And i had to climb down and trouble the PREGNANT lady’s husband to take the upper bed and i occupied the middle one..
I do not know why they are going for this kind of hare brained schemes when they have this much cash surplus…
There is no way that we could protest and we are going to be treated like cattle..
I am not sure if 3rd AC has the 3 beds scheme in the side berths..
Regards
Vijay
